Walking from Sheffield to Manchester

On 31st March 2021 I will be marking the first bit of spring, and the return of brighter days and better weather (fingers crossed…), by heading up to Sheffield to do a three day walk across the Peak District National Park to Manchester.

Setting off on 1st April (no joke) I intend to follow the route below (route chalked up on Ordnance Survey Maps):

Day 1: Sheffield – Hope (see planned route or download the GPX. file), via Rivelin Valley, Stanage Edge and Bamford

Day 2: Hope – Thornsett (see planned route or download the GPX. file), via Mam Tor ridge, Lord’s Seat Mount Famine and Hayfield

Day 3: Thornsett – Manchester (see planned route or download the GPX. file), via New Mills, the Peak Forest Canal and the Ashton Canal

Actually – the walk will take 4 days – because I intend to spend an extra day in Thornsett and head up Kinder Scout on the third day. I will retrace the route taken by the Mass Trespassers in 1932. This is an incredibly apt time to do it because the 1932 of their direct action is the 24th April this year. I will post my route here on Walk Midlands for anyone to trace if they want, just prior to the 90th Anniversary date. If you would like to find out more about the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass, and the importance of such actions both historical and in the present day for ensuring ordinary people can access and enjoy the land, I’ve written a bit about it here.

Looking forward to posting updates here and on my Twitter and Instagram accounts as I walk the route.
