Walking from Manchester to Leeds

Next week I am spending four days walking from Manchester to Leeds. Building upon the experience of my walk last year between Sheffield and Manchester to long distance walk between two other great northern metropolises.

The route I am taking, out along the canal network from Piccadilly Station to Glossop just over the boundary of Great Manchester in Derbyshire, on day one. Then on day two I will walk along the Trans Pennine Trail to Penistone. From there on the third day I will head north, via the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, to Wakefield. On the fourth and final day from Wakefield on the shortest day of the walk distance wise I will head north to Leeds where the walk will finish at the city’s main railway station.

Along the way I will spend a day climbing Bleaklow, the second highest summit in the Peak District, before heading back to Glossop.

My walk at the start of last April between Sheffield and Manchester across the Peak District and along Great Manchester’s canal network has proven one of the most popular items published on Walk Midlands. Based upon the feedback I have received, it has been enjoyed by a large number of people who have traced my footsteps. It is great to see experienced walkers, and those dipping their feet into long distance walking for the first time, alike, use the walk as a means of getting out and about, experience the national park, countryside, and outlying towns better two of Britain’s great cities.

Truly a great contemporary expression of the pivotal role walking, especially in the Peak District and other scenic rural areas near major cities, has played in the development of oppositional and counter cultural identities in modern Britain.

Routes I intend to take are linked to in OS Explorer below. I will be posting updates each day along the way…

Day One: Manchester – Glossop

Day Two: Glossop – Penistone

Day Three: Penistone – Wakefield

Day Four: Wakefield – Leeds
